"Why Don't Woodpeckers Get Headaches?"

By Mike O'Connor

Sure to win a Pulitzer Prize, "Why Don't Woodpeckers Get Headaches?" is a compilation of answers by Mike O'Connor to some of the most challenging bird questions of today.

Mike has answered thousands of bird questions over the years while walking in the grocery store or that have been written and emailed in, by real people (mostly), which have appeared in a weekly column, "Ask the Bird Folks," for eleven years in "The Cape Codder" newspaper. "Why Don't Woodpeckers Get Headaches?" features 52 of these questions with Mike's answers aimed to satisfy the curiosity of both young and old, birder and nonbirder, beginner or veteran bird lover.

The huge popularity of "Ask the Bird Folks" is due to Mike's flair for wit, humor, sarcasm & the occasional insult. Not to mention the fact that he actually knows what he's talking about when it comes to birds. You come away with a good laugh as well as useful information about birds. Folks subscribe to "The Cape Codder" from all around the country just to read what Mike has to say every week.

You can still check out all the articles at "Ask the Bird Folks" on our website.

Mike opened Bird Watcher's General Store way back in 1983. After a string of failed jobs, Mike realized he could never work for anyone and had to be the boss. He decided to turn his passion for birding into a business. Bird Watcher's General Store was the first shop of its kind to cater to bird enthusiasts.

Bird watching has now become a huge industry. Bird Watcher's General Store remains the largest shop of its kind and true to the theme of birding and bird feeding. No dog beds, wind-up frogs or toilet plungers (unless there's a bird on it or a bird needs one).

Located on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Mike's shop is a popular tourist destination stop.

Mike has managed to fool a few folks into thinking he's smart. Since beginning "Ask the Bird Folks" he has been asked to write for a British magazine, had his articles appear in "The Best American Science & Nature Writing 2004," and answers bird questions on a radio talk show out of Boston.

"Mike O'Connor knows birds-I mean, REALLY knows them. He has been answering questions about birds for years, and he can deliver the straight scoop with a hilarious twist that makes it unforgettable. Reading this book is almost as much fun as bird watching, and that's saying a lot!"

- Cliffie, Our Mail Carrier:
"More laughs than reading the zip code directory."
