Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between December 13 and December 19, 2022.
A Western Grebe found on Mashpee-Wakeby Pond on Saturday was the highlight of the Buzzard’s Bay Christmas Bird Count. Other highlights from the count, which covers town on both sides of the bay including Falmouth and Marion included 3 Redheads, a hybrid Barrow’s x Common Goldeneye, 350 American Coots, an Eastern Phoebe, several Red Crossbills, and 2 Palm Warblers.
The Cape Cod Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, with highlights including a Grasshopper Sparrow in Eastham, 2 Blue-winged Teal in West Harwich, several Red Crossbills, 9 Orange-crowned Warblers in Orleans, several Yellow-breasted Chats, and a Painted Bunting in Chatham.
The Slaty-backed Gull in Provincetown Harbor was last reported on the 13th.
Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a late Great Shearwater and Laughing Gull, plus 400 Long-tailed Ducks, 1200 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Dovekies, 9 Common Murres, 350 Razorbills, a Thick-billed Murre, and 6 Iceland Gulls.
Other sightings around the Cape included a Blue-winged Teal and 5 Northern Pintail in Marstons Mills, a Glaucous Gull at Corporation Beach in Dennis, aGreat Egret in West Dennis, 2 Snowy Egrets in Yarmouth, and a Short-eared Owl in Eastham.
