Ask The Bird Folks
Mike O’Connor, the owner of Bird Watcher’s General Store, wrote the popular article, Ask the Bird Folks, for The Cape Codder newspaper every week for over 22 years. His goal, is to answer some of life’s most challenging questions. You know, bird questions.
Read through the most recent and past articles below, consisting of questions asked by readers and real people like you, and maybe you’ll learn enough about birds to write your own article.
Also popular were the bird illustrations by Catherine Clark that accompanied Ask the Bird Folks from the beginning. Her drawings can be found hanging on refrigerator doors throughout the country.
Keep your eyes on this page ─ if Mike writes more articles, they will show up here.
But any information you may be looking for is sure to be here. Just type in a subject and something will come up…getting bluebirds, getting orioles, getting hummingbirds, keeping feeders clean, choosing binoculars, choosing field guides…you get the point. If you need to know something about birds, you’ll find it here! Some of the jokes may be outdated, but you can bet they’re still funny. And the information is spot on!
Screech Owl Habits
Dear Bird Folks, For the past few years I have had a pair of screech owls nesting in a box in my yard. They are active around the nest box and then nothing. Days go by and I don't see any signs of them. My thought is that both parents are inside the box taking turns...

The Rising Cost of Sunflower Seed
Dear Bird Folks, I just came back from the local garden center, where I buy my birdseed, and was stunned by the prices. I usually buy an assortment of 50 lb. bags, but all of them have gone way up. I walked out, went home and started calling around. It seems that...
Red-crested Cardinal Not New

Where to See Rheas on Cape Cod

What Do The Leg Bands Mean?

Same Birds, New Names
Dear Bird Folks, As I was watching a Yellow-rumped Warbler eating at my suet feeder I started thinking about bird names. Why was the Sparrow Hawk's name changed to American Kestrel? They still eat sparrows. Who decides that a name should be changed and why? Back to...
When Bad Things Happen With Pretty Feeders

Shovelers Have Big Bills
Dear Bird Folks, As I sit at home tonight, flipping through my bird book, I notice a duck called "Northern Shoveler." Boy, that sure is one freaky looking beak on that bird. Since I don't see any other ducks with bills like that, I would like to know why shovelers...
Why A “V” ?
Dear Bird Folks, I've been hesitant to write in a question because I didn't want to be teased, but this question has been bugging me. Why do geese fly in a stereotypical V-formation? I've searched your website for the answer to this question but, oddly enough, no one...
Seeing Winter Wrens a Treat

Silent Birds

Why No Goldfinches?

Sapsuckers Like Orderly Holes

What’s Wrong With a Stuffed Gull

Brainy Chickadees

End of the Year Clean Up
I'd bet many people think that "Ask the Bird Folks" is produced by a well paid, highly efficient staff of writers and researchers, that is on par with the team at CBS's 60 Minutes. The answer is yes we are, except for the well paid and highly efficient part. In...

Foxes Save for a Rainy Day

True Grit

Mate-Feeding Not Always What It Appears To Be
